Es handelte sich schon in der Antike um eine bedeutende Stadt, wie schriftliche und archäologische Quellen belegen. Sie ist für eine modern überbaute antike Stadt sehr gut erforscht. Aquincum bestand aus zwei Siedlungskernen und bildete eine Art Doppelstadt. Es gab ein Legionslager mit einer Siedlung und eine unabhängige Zivilstadt im Norden davon. Die Stadt lag am Danuvius , der damals die Grenze des Römischen Reiches in dieser Region darstellte. Dadurch kam der Stadt auch eine besondere strategische Bedeutung zu.
