Matera ist eine Stadt in der süditalienischen Region Basilikata mit 60.411 Einwohnern und Hauptstadt der Provinz Matera. Die Stadt ist Sitz des Erzbistums Matera-Irsina. Bekannt ist Matera für seine Altstadt, die zu einem erheblichen Teil aus Höhlensiedlungen – den Sassi – besteht. Diese gehören seit 1993 zum UNESCO-Welterbe.
