Als Via Francigena, auch Frankenstraße oder Frankenweg, werden im weiteren Sinne die alten Fernstraßen bezeichnet, die Pilger auf ihrem Weg von Franken nach Rom zur Grabstätte der Apostel Petrus und Paulus, nutzten. Oft findet sich dafür auch – auf das Ziel bezogen – die Bezeichnung „Via Romea“. Die Rekonstruktion der Via Francigena heute stützt sich im Wesentlichen auf Angaben des Erzbischofs Sigerich von Canterbury, der im Jahre 990 nach Rom pilgerte.
