Porta San Matteo, erreichbar über die Hauptstraße, ist eher typisch für San Gimignano. Die Via San Matteo hat ihren Namen von diesem Tor.
Die Straße war der Abschnitt der Francigena, der die Stadt von Norden nach Süden durchquerte. Nach und nach wuchs um diese Straße herum ein ganzes Viertel. Die heute noch erhaltenen Gebäude stammen fast alle aus dem 13. Jahrhundert und bieten einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Stadt im Mittelalter.
Die Porta di San Matteo wurde 1262 im sienesischen Stil erbaut. Nach der Passage erwartet Sie eine faszinierende Tour durch Häuser, Paläste und mittelalterliche Türme. Entlang der Via di San Matteo steht der prächtige Hausturm der Pesciolini, ein Kuppelturm aus dem 13. Jahrhundert; die wunderschöne Chiesa di San Bartolo; der Cancelleria-Palazzo; die Torri Gemelle dei Salvucci; um schließlich an der Piazza della Cisterna anzukommen.
