Porta San Matteo, accessible par la route principale, est plus typique de San Gimignano. La Via San Matteo tire son nom de cette porte.
La route était le tronçon de la Francigena qui traversait la ville du nord au sud. Petit à petit tout un quartier s'est développé autour de cette route. Les bâtiments qui subsistent encore aujourd'hui datent presque tous du XIIIe siècle et offrent un aperçu fascinant de la ville telle qu'elle aurait été au Moyen Âge.
La Porta di San Matteo a été construite en 1262 dans le style siennois. Après le passage, une visite fascinante des maisons, des palais et des tours médiévales vous attend. Le long de la Via di San Matteo se trouvent la magnifique maison-tour des Pesciolini, une tour à coupole du XIIIe siècle ; la belle Chiesa di San Bartolo; le Palazzo Cancelleria; les Torri Gemelle dei Salvucci; pour arriver enfin à Piazza della Cisterna.
