Porta San Matteo, raggiungibile dalla strada principale, è più tipica di San Gimignano. La Via San Matteo prende il nome da questa porta.
La strada era il tratto della Francigena che attraversava la città da nord a sud. A poco a poco, un intero quartiere è cresciuto attorno a questa strada. Gli edifici ancora in piedi oggi sono quasi tutti del XIII secolo e offrono uno scorcio affascinante della città come sarebbe stata nel Medioevo.
La Porta di San Matteo fu costruita nel 1262 in stile senese. Dopo il passaggio vi aspetta un affascinante tour tra case, palazzi e torri medievali. Lungo via di San Matteo si trovano la magnifica casa-torre Pesciolini, torre bombata del XIII secolo; la bella Chiesa di San Bartolo; il Palazzo della Cancelleria; le Torri Gemelle dei Salvucci; per arrivare infine a Piazza della Cisterna.
