Die Kirche wurde 1342 im Auftrag von Eleonora D'Aragona erbaut .
Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde die Kirche erweitert. Die Kirche hat zwei Portale , das Hauptportal auf der Piazza del Carmine ist im Stil der katalanischen Gotik und besteht aus zwei achteckigen Säulen und einem dreifachen Bastionsring mit einer Blume an der Spitze. Das Nebengebäude befindet sich in der Via Incisa und besteht aus weißem Marmor. Es wurde 1468 nach einem Entwurf von Francesco Laurana ausgeführt und von Pietro di Bonitate angefertigt.
Der Innenraum ist reich an Stuckarbeiten mit Dekorationen aus dem 17. Jahrhundert von Orazio Ferraro. Ebenfalls von Ferraro stammen das Gemälde mit der Madonna dell’Itria sowie die Gemälde mit der Kreuzigung und der Madonna del Soccorso .
Das Gebäude wird derzeit als Ausstellungsraum genutzt.
