De kerk werd gebouwd in 1342 in opdracht van Eleonora D'Aragona.
In de 16e eeuw werd de kerk uitgebreid. De kerk heeft twee portalen, de belangrijkste op Piazza del Carmine is in Catalaans-gotische stijl en bestaat uit twee achthoekige pilaren en een drievoudige bastionring met bovenaan een bloem. De secundaire bevindt zich aan de Via Incisa en is van wit marmer, uitgevoerd in 1468 naar een ontwerp van Francesco Laurana en gemaakt door Pietro di Bonitate.
Het interieur is rijk aan stucwerk met 17e-eeuwse decoraties van Orazio Ferraro. Ook van Ferraro zijn het schilderij met de Madonna dell'Itria en de schilderijen met de kruisiging en de Madonna del Soccorso.
Het gebouw wordt momenteel gebruikt als tentoonstellingsruimte.
