L'església fou construïda l'any 1342 per ordre d'Eleonora d'Aragona.
L'església es va ampliar al segle XVI. L' església té dos portals , el principal de la plaça del Carmine és d'estil gòtic català i consta de dos pilars octogonals i un triple anell de bastió amb una flor a la part superior. El secundari està situat a la Via Incisa i està fet de marbre blanc, executat l'any 1468 segons un disseny de Francesco Laurana i fet per Pietro di Bonitate.
L' interior és ric en estucs amb decoracions del segle XVII d'Orazio Ferraro. També són de Ferraro el quadre amb la Madonna dell'Itria i els quadres amb la Crucifixió i la Madonna del Soccorso .
Actualment l'edifici s'utilitza com a espai expositiu.
