La chiesa fu costruita nel 1342 per ordine di Eleonora D'Aragona.
La chiesa fu ampliata nel XVI secolo. La chiesa presenta due portali , quello principale su piazza del Carmine è in stile gotico catalano ed è costituito da due pilastri ottagonali e da un triplo bastione ad anello con un fiore in alto. La secondaria si trova sulla via Incisa ed è in marmo bianco, eseguita nel 1468 su disegno di Francesco Laurana e realizzata da Pietro di Bonitate.
L' interno è ricco di stucchi con decorazioni seicentesche di Orazio Ferraro. Sempre di Ferraro sono il dipinto con la Madonna dell'Itria e i dipinti con la Crocifissione e la Madonna del Soccorso .
L'edificio è attualmente utilizzato come spazio espositivo.
