Nirgendwo auf der Welt findest du so viele Mühlen auf einem Haufen wie im Dorf Kinderdijk. Rund um 1740 wurden hier 19 robuste Mühlen gebaut, die bis heute gut erhalten und noch in Betrieb sind.
Die Mühlen mahlen das überschüssige Wasser der Alblasserwaard-Polder, die einen deutlich niedrigeren Stand haben als der Meeresspiegel, in den benachbarten Fluss Lek. Der Fluss leitet seinerseits dieses Wasser wieder zur Nordsee ab.
1997 wurden die Mühlen von Kinderdijk in die Liste des Weltkulturerbes der UNESCO aufgenommen.
