Nowhere in the world will you find as many windmills together as in the village of Kinderdijk. Around 1740, 19 sturdy windmills were built here that have been well maintained and are still in operation today.
The windmills grind the excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders, which lie significantly below sea level, to the nearby river Lek. The river, in turn, drains this water back to the North Sea.
In 1997, the windmills of Kinderdijk were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
