Der Pannerdens-Kanal ist der künstlich angelegte und abkürzende erste Teil des niederländischen Niederrheins . Der Rhein teilt sich in den Niederlanden in zwei größere Flussarme, von denen die Waal der linke und wasserreichere und der Niederrhein der rechte Arm ist. Von letzterem zweigt am Ende des Pannerdens-Kanals die IJssel als nach Norden fließender Mündungsarm des Rheins ab. Später teilt sich der Niederrhein in den Lek und in den Oude Rijn, dem er aber nur eine minimale Wassermenge abgibt. Die Lek vereinigt sich vor Rotterdam wieder mit einem Teilarm der Waal, den Noord, bevor beide zusammen mit einem weiteren Waal-Teilarm, der Alten Maas , zur Nordsee fließen.
