Die Burg von Leiden ist ein Beispiel für eine der ältesten noch bestehenden Burgen in den Niederlanden. Das Bauwerk befindet sich an dem Ort, wo die beiden Arme des Rheins zusammenfließen. Das runde Bauwerk steht auf einer Motte, einem künstlichen Hügel. Aus archäologischen Untersuchungen hat sich ergeben, dass an dieser Stelle um das Jahr 1000 bereits ein Holzgebäude stand. Im elften Jahrhundert wurde der Hügel mehrfach erhöht bis auf ca. 9 Meter über die Umgebung.
