De Braakman ist ein Naturschutzgebiet und ein ehemaliger Meeresarm der Westerschelde, der durch eine Reihe von Sturmfluten im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert entstanden ist. Eine dieser bekannten Sturmfluten ist die erste und zweite Sint-Elisabethsvloed. Lange Zeit bildete das Wasser eine natürliche Barriere zwischen Ost- und West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. Der Meeresarm war auch der Zugang zu den Häfen von Boekhoute, Philippine, Axel und Sas van Gent. 1952 wurde De Braakman abgedämmt.
