Das Drents Museum befindet sich in Assen, an der Stelle des ehemaligen Klosters Maria in Campis. Der Haupteingang befindet sich seit 2011 in einem ehemaligen Pferdestall des Drostenhauses, das über einen unterirdischen Gang mit den anderen Gebäuden verbunden ist. 1854 wurde das Provinzialmuseum für Altertümer gegründet. Das Museum begann mit einem Schrank im Regierungsgebäude, das Teil des Klosters Maria in Campis war. Anfang der 1900er Jahre fand es im neuen Gebäude des Staatsarchivs Unterkunft. 1964 wurde das Empfangshaus gekauft und zehn Jahre später zog das Museum ins Provinciehuis um. Auch das Drostenhaus und die Abteikirche wurden dem Museum hinzugefügt. Seit 1996 heißt das Museum Drents Museum und ist in einer selbständigen Stiftung untergebracht.
