An dieser Stelle lag vor 1000 Jahren eine Meerestiefe, die durch die Ablagerung von Meerdünen verlandete. 1997 wurde ein Projekt ins Leben gerufen, um die Veränderungen der Dünenlandschaft zu untersuchen und die Auswirkungen zu sehen, als es hier noch eine Meerestiefe gab. Man grub ''De Kerkf''. Die Kerf ist eine Öffnung, die in den Dünen von Bergen gegraben wurde, um eindringendes Seewasser zuzulassen und so die Veränderungen in der Dünenlandschaft zu studieren. Eine solche Öffnung in der Seereep wird ebenfalls Slufter genannt.
