Ouddorp ist in erster Linie ein beliebter Badeort mit einem breiten und langen Strand, der in einem schönen Dünengebiet liegt.
Möglicherweise entstand das Dorf bereits im Jahr 900. Damit ist Ouddorp mit Abstand das älteste Dorf von Goeree-Overflakkee. Die Dorfkirche ist Sankt Martin geweiht. 1418 kommt es während der Hoekse und Kabeljauwse Streitigkeiten zu einem Plünderung und Brandstiftung durch Herzog Jan von Brabant und 1490 durch Junker Franz von Brederode und Herrn Jan von Naaldwijk. Um 1594 gibt es in Ouddorp eine 'niederländische reformierte Gemeinde'. Heute gibt es im Dorf sechs Religionsgemeinschaften.
Ouddorp war lange Zeit eine sehr geschlossene Gemeinde. Der Goeree-Dialekt (gesprochen in Ouddorp und Goedereede) steht dem Holländischen sehr fern und ist durchweg Zeeuws. Der Anteil der Dialektsprecher in Ouddorp ist sehr hoch (der höchste in ganz Goeree-Overflakkee).
