Die erste hölzerne Kapelle an diesem Standort wurde zu Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts erbaut und gehörte zur Kirche von Leiderdorp. In der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts besteht ein starker Bedarf an einer größeren Kirche auf dem Hochland (hoog land), deren Bau 1377 beginnt. Die Kirche war fast als dritte Kathedrale der Niederlande vorgesehen, musste aber letztendlich zurückstehen, da diese Rolle 1535 der St. Bavo-Kirche in Haarlem zugeteilt wurde. Erweiterungen der Kirche wurden gestoppt, sodass die Kirche in einem "unvollendeten" Zustand blieb. Wäre das Gebäude fertiggestellt worden, wäre es eine der größten gotischen Kathedralen Europas geworden.
Im Laufe der Jahre fanden mehrere umfangreiche Renovierungen statt, von 1840 bis 1903 und von 1952 bis 1972. Viele originale Details sind erhalten geblieben.
Die Kirche ist ein Denkmal und manchmal für Besucher geöffnet.
