La primera capilla de madera en este lugar fue construida a principios del siglo XIV, perteneciendo a la iglesia de Leiderdorp. En la segunda mitad del siglo XIV hay una gran necesidad de una iglesia más grande en las tierras altas (hoog land), cuya construcción comienza en 1377. La iglesia casi es elegida para ser la tercera catedral en los Países Bajos, pero tiene que ceder ya que finalmente ese rol se le otorga a la iglesia de San Bavo en Haarlem en 1535. Las ampliaciones de la iglesia se detuvieron, dejando la iglesia en un estado de "inacabado". Si el edificio se hubiera terminado, habría sido una de las catedrales góticas más grandes de Europa.
A lo largo de los años se llevan a cabo varias grandes renovaciones, de 1840 a 1903 y de 1952 a 1972. Se han conservado muchos detalles originales.
La iglesia es un monumento y a veces está abierta para visitantes.
