Das Kloster wurde 1847 von den Schwestern der Franziskanerinnen von Heythuysen gegründet. Später richteten sie auch eine Internatsschule und eine Lehranstalt, Maria Immaculata, ein. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde der Komplex stark beschädigt und 1948 gründeten die Passionisten dort ein Seminar, St. Paulus vom Kreuz, das später Gabriëlcollege genannt wurde. Hier wurde auch Sekundarunterricht erteilt. Ab 1923 war es die R.K. Lehranstalt Maria-Immaculata. Zwischen 1977 und 1993 war der Komplex ein Schifferinternat und eine Berufsschule für die Rhein- und Binnenfahrt sowie die Küstenschifffahrt der Stiftung Königliches Bildungsfund für die Schifffahrt. 1997 wurde der Komplex abgerissen, mit Ausnahme der Fassaden der Lehranstalt. Es wurden Wohnhäuser und Wohnungen errichtet und das Viertel heißt jetzt Maasstaete.
