The monastery was founded in 1847 by the Franciscan sisters of Heythuysen. They later also established a boarding school and a training school, Maria Immaculata. During World War II, the complex was heavily damaged, and in 1948 the Passionist fathers founded a seminary there, St. Paul of the Cross, which was later named Gabriëlcollege. Secondary education was also provided here. From 1923, it was the R.C. Training School Maria-Immaculata. Between 1977 and 1993, the complex was a boarding school for skippers and a training school for Rhine and inland navigation and coastal shipping of the Royal Education Fund for Shipping. In 1997, the complex was demolished, with the exception of the façades of the training school. Houses and apartments have been built, and the neighborhood is now called Maasstaete.
