Mit der Ausdehnung von Eygelshoven durch die Kohlegruben wurde die alte Kirche St. Johannes der Täufer auf dem Kirchberg zu klein und es wurde eine größere Kirche benötigt. 1920 wurde mit dem Bau der neuen Kirche nach einem Entwurf von Alphons Boosten und Jos Ritzen aus Maastricht begonnen. Diese Kirche ist seit 2001 ein nationales Denkmal.
