Die Kirche von Ulrum stammt aus der ersten Hälfte des dreizehnten Jahrhunderts. Das Gebäude gilt als ein Beispiel der frühen Romanogotik, wobei das westlichste Joch überwiegend romanisch ist.
Bei der Reduktion von Groningen ging die ursprünglich katholische Kirche zu den reformierten über. Von dieser Kirche aus begann Hendrik de Cock die Abspaltung von 1834.
