Im Frühling 1940 hatte die niederländische Armee Barrikaden in Form von mit Beton gefüllten Abwasserrohren und Löchern in der Straßenoberfläche installiert. Am 10. Mai 1940 jedoch hatten die deutschen Eindringlinge gepanzerte Fahrzeuge mit einem Eisenpfahl ausgestattet, mit dem sie die Abwasserrohre mühelos beiseite schieben konnten. Neugierige Passanten wurden von den Deutschen aufgefordert, eine helfende Hand zu leisten und mussten die Löcher in der Straßenoberfläche wieder schließen.
