Durante la primavera del 1940, l'esercito olandese aveva installato barricate sotto forma di tubi fognari riempiti di cemento e di buche scavate nella superficie stradale. Tuttavia, il 10 maggio 1940, gli invasori tedeschi avevano equipaggiato automobili blindate con un paletto di ferro con cui potevano facilmente spostare i tubi fognari. I curiosi spettatori furono ordinati dai tedeschi di dare una mano e dovettero chiudere di nuovo le buche nella superficie stradale.
