Das Versteck bei Valthe, bei dem am 11. April 1984 errichteten Denkmal, war einer der beiden Zufluchten im Valtherwald zwischen Valthe und Emmen, die während des Zweiten Weltkriegs ausgegraben wurden und von einer Gruppe jüdischer Untertaucher bewohnt waren. In beiden Waldverstecken, die von den Untertauchern selbst "keet" genannt wurden, befanden sich in wechselnder Zusammensetzung insgesamt sechzehn Juden. Die Namen dieser sechzehn Juden sind: Louis Bachrach; Ab van Dien; Samuël From und Sara From-Kropveld und ihre Kinder Adolf, Roza und Bernard; Grietje de Jonge-Kropveld, Mozes Gudema und Dina Gudema-De Levie; Maurits Jakobs und Rosa van Jakobs-Van Dam; die Brüder Leo und Jacob Kropveld; Sitta Meiboom-Speier und ihre Tochter Bep Carla Meiboom.
