Overlangel gehörte seit 1810 zur Gemeinde Herpen. 1941 wurde diese Gemeinde von der Gemeinde Ravenstein annektiert. Diese wurde wiederum 2003 von der Gemeinde Oss annektiert.
Der Name Langel stammt von langelo, was „langgestreckter Wald“ bedeutet. Das Präfix Over bezieht sich auf Bovenstrooms, im Gegensatz zu Neerlangel.
