Overlangel har siden 1810 været en del af kommunen Herpen. I 1941 blev denne kommune annekteret af kommunen Ravenstein. Denne blev i sin tur annekteret af kommunen Oss i 2003.
Navnet Langel stammer fra langelo, som betyder langstrakt skov. Forstavelsen Over henviser til Bovenstrooms, i modsætning til Neerlangel.
