Overlangel ha formado parte del municipio de Herpen desde 1810. En 1941, este municipio fue anexionado por el municipio de Ravenstein. Este, a su vez, fue anexionado por el municipio de Oss en 2003.
El nombre Langel proviene de langelo, que significa bosque alargado. El prefijo Over se refiere a Bovenstrooms, en contraste con Neerlangel.
