Overlangel ha fatto parte del comune di Herpen dal 1810. Nel 1941 questo comune è stato annesso dal comune di Ravenstein. Quest'ultimo è stato a sua volta annesso nel 2003 dal comune di Oss.
Il nome Langel deriva da langelo, che significa bosco allungato. Il prefisso Over si riferisce a Bovenstrooms, in contrapposizione a Neerlangel.
