Wir wissen bereits, dass der Turfmarkt auf den Torfhandel in Gouda verweist. Unsere Stadt war für Holland der größte Torfmarkt und Umschlaghafen. Dies liegt an der hohen Ernte an Torf durch die Technik des Schlagtorfens oder Torfzugs. Infolgedessen steigt die Anzahl der Goudse Torfschiffer. Am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts sind die meisten von dem Torfhandel abhängig. Dies bleibt so, bis die Torfverbrennung durch die Kohlenverbrennung ersetzt wird.
