We weten al dat de Turfmarkt verwijst naar de turfhandel in Gouda. Onze stad is voor Holland de grootste turfmarkt en overslaghaven geweest. Dit vanwege de hoge opbrengst aan turf door de techniek slagturven of turftrekken. Als gevolg hiervan stijgt het aantal Goudse turfschippers. Aan het einde van de 16e eeuw zijn de meeste afhankelijk van de turfhandel. Dit houdt aan tot de turfstook vervangen wordt door de kolenstook.
