Paesens, entstanden im 11. Jahrhundert, wuchs zu einem Fischerort heran. Ab dem 16. Jahrhundert lag das Dorf durch Sedimentablagerungen immer weiter vom Meer entfernt, und im 18. Jahrhundert entstand westlich von Paesens das Zwillingsdorf Moddergat. Dort konnten die Fischerboote leichter vor Anker gehen. Die Einwohner beider Dörfer bildeten zusammen eine Fischereiflotte.
Paesens und Moddergat sind bekannt für ihre Fischereigeschichte, insbesondere wegen der Fischertragödie im Jahr 1883. Während eines schweren Frühlingssturms gingen 17 Schiffe unter und 83 Dorfbewohner kamen ums Leben.
