Paesens, que se originó en el siglo XI, creció hasta convertirse en un pueblo de pescadores. A partir del siglo XVI, el pueblo se fue alejando progresivamente del mar debido a la acumulación de sedimentos y en el siglo XVIII se formó al oeste de Paesens el pueblo gemelo de Moddergat. Allí, los barcos pesqueros podían anclar más fácilmente en la rada. Los habitantes de ambos pueblos formaron juntos una flota pesquera.
Paesens y Moddergat son conocidos por su pasado pesquero, especialmente debido a la tragedia pesquera de 1883. Durante una fuerte tormenta de primavera, 17 barcos naufragaron y 83 aldeanos perdieron la vida.
