Auf beiden Seiten der Aa liegen die Überreste des 'Dam von Mendoza'. Dieses Objekt, ein Damm zwischen den beiden Decksandaufhöhungen, hat nichts mit einem Feldherrn dieses Namens zu tun, sondern stammt aus dem Jahr 1700. Er wurde aus Angst vor einem Angriff der Franzosen aus dem Süden angelegt. Durch das Stauen des Bachs Aa oder Weerijs', der in Richtung Breda fließt, schuf man einen Stausee. Kam der Feind näher, wurde der Damm entfernt. So stand die Umgebung der Stadt unter Wasser: ein perfektes Verteidigungsmittel.
