Des deux côtés de l'Aa se trouvent les vestiges du 'Barrage de Mendoza'. Cet objet, un barrage entre les deux crêtes de sable, n'a rien à voir avec un général de ce nom, mais date de 1700. Il a été construit par crainte d'une attaque des Français venant du sud. En retenant le ruisseau Aa ou Weerijs, qui coule vers Breda, on a créé un lac de retenue. Si l'ennemi approchait, on retirait le barrage. Ainsi, les environs de la ville étaient inondés : un moyen de défense parfait.
