Wie viele wohlhabende Amsterdamer im Goldenen Zeitalter besaß Admiral Cornelis Tromp neben einer bedeutenden Villa an der Oudezijds Voorburgwal ein zweites Haus außerhalb der Stadt. Das Haus in der Stadt wurde in der Wintersaison bewohnt, das Landhaus außerhalb der Stadt in den Sommermonaten. Zwei Mal im Jahr zogen die Bewohner und das Personal und bei den weniger wohlhabenden Familien auch Geschirr, Bettwäsche und Haushaltsgegenstände von einem Ort zum anderen, meist mit dem Schiff.
Das auf Auftrag von Cornelis Tromp gebaute Haus De Trompenburgh ist ein wichtiger Landsitz in ’s-Graveland. Das Landhaus hat die Form eines Schiffes und ist von Wasser umgeben. Vom Dach, das wie ein Schiffsdeck gestaltet ist, reichte der Blick früher bis zur Zuiderzee.
