Im Jahr 1369 wurde an der Stelle der heutigen Grote Kerk am Kerkplein eine Kirche aus Holz und Stroh gebaut. Nach der Weihe im Jahr 1370 wurde die Kirche weiter gebaut und renoviert. Die erste Erweiterung im Jahr 1405 beinhaltete einen Steinchor. Die Arbeiten an den beiden Seitenschiffen begannen 1429 und der Chorumgang wurde 1480 fertiggestellt und 1500 fertiggestellt. 1519 wurde das südliche Querschiff vergrößert. 1878 wurde die Kirche durch einen Blitz völlig zerstört. Als Ersatz für die niedergebrannte Kirche wurde von 1881 bis 1883 die heutige Grote Kerk errichtet.
Die Grote Kerk wurde 1968 wegen Gottesdiensten geschlossen und 1984 verkauft, um sie in Geschäfte und Wohnungen umzuwandeln. Die Geschäfte sind inzwischen geschlossen und ein Restaurant und ein Hotel wurden gebaut.
