En 1369, à l'emplacement de l'actuelle Grote Kerk sur le Kerkplein, une église en bois et en paille a été construite. Après sa consécration en 1370, l'église a continué à être construite et rénovée. La première extension en 1405 a inclus un chœur en pierre. Les travaux sur les deux nefs latérales ont commencé en 1429 et le déambulatoire a été achevé en 1480 et terminé en 1500. En 1519, le transept sud a été agrandi. En 1878, l'église a été complètement détruite par la foudre. En remplacement de l'église brûlée, l'actuelle Grote Kerk a été construite de 1881 à 1883.
La Grote Kerk a été fermée en 1968 en raison des services religieux et vendue en 1984 pour être transformée en magasins et en appartements. Les magasins sont maintenant fermés et un restaurant et un hôtel ont été construits.
