Die Adriaan wurde am 19. Mai 1779 eröffnet. Die Windmühle steht am Fluss Spaarne, damals am Rande der Stadt. Die Mühle wurde auf den bestehenden Fundamenten des ehemaligen Goe Vrouwturms erbaut. Der Goe Vrouwturm war Teil der alten Verteidigungsanlagen rund um Haarlem. Da die Mühle auf das Fundament des Turms gebaut wurde, stand die Mühle hoch und fing viel Wind ein.
