El Adriaan se inauguró el 19 de mayo de 1779. El molino de viento está situado junto al río Spaarne, en aquel entonces en el borde de la ciudad. El molino fue construido sobre los cimientos existentes de la antigua Torre de Goe Vrouw. La Torre de Goe Vrouw formaba parte de la antigua fortificación alrededor de Haarlem. Debido a que el molino se construyó sobre el cimiento de la torre, el molino se encontraba alto y captaba así mucho viento.
