Die Umgebung von Koekange besteht aus einer Wiesenlandschaft mit der charakteristischen Streifenbewirtschaftung. Ursprünglich war der Ort ein Reihendorf, aber durch den Neubau nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ist ein richtiger Dorfkern entstanden.
Koekange ist eine Randmooreinfassung, die im Mittelalter im Echtenerveen entstand. Es wird erstmals 1290 erwähnt. 1331 erhielt Koekange die Erlaubnis, eine eigene Kirche zu bauen. Vor 1331 ging man in Blijdenstein zur Kirche. Die Kirche war Johannes dem Täufer geweiht.
