El entorno de Koekange consiste en un paisaje de praderas con la característica parcelación en franjas. Originalmente, el lugar era una aldea lineal, pero gracias a la construcción de nuevas viviendas tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial, ha surgido un verdadero núcleo urbano.
Koekange es una explotación de turberas periféricas, que se formó en la Edad Media en el Echtenerveen. Se menciona por primera vez en 1290. En 1331, Koekange recibió permiso para construir su propia iglesia. Antes de 1331, la gente iba a la iglesia en Blijdenstein. La iglesia estaba dedicada a San Juan Bautista.
