Butterhuizen ist ein Stadtteil der Stadt Heerhugowaard. Ursprünglich war es eine Ansiedlung an der N242, die hauptsächlich aus Reihenhäusern bestand. Doch durch das Wachstum der Stadt Heerhugowaard wurde östlich der Ansiedlung ein Stadtteil errichtet, der denselben Namen erhielt. Die Ansiedlung Butterhuizen wurde auch eine Zeit lang bis Anfang des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts auf Niederländisch Boterhuizen genannt, später übernahm man die Bezeichnung aus dem lokalen Dialekt.
