Die Pappen Uhr von Aardenburg verweist auf gleich drei Schlüsselperioden in der Geschichte dieser ältesten Stadt von Zeeland: die römische Zeit, das Mittelalter und den Achtzigjährigen Krieg (1568-1648). Wenn wir auf den kleineren Speicher-Turm zoomieren, hängt dort die ‘Pappen Uhr’. Im Mittelalter wurden die Stadttore abends um 21 Uhr geschlossen. Um 20 Uhr läutete die Uhr, um dies anzukündigen. Damals aßen die Aardenburger ihre fünfte und letzte Mahlzeit des Tages: Buttermilchbrei. In dieser Zeit wurde viel Schweinefleisch gegessen, also fettig, die saure Buttermilch förderte die Verdauung. Noch heute läutet jeden Abend um 20 Uhr die Pappen Uhr für fünf Minuten. Aber ob die Einwohner immer noch Brei essen…?
