De papklok van Aardenburg verwijst naar maar liefst drie sleutelperiodes in de geschiedenis van deze oudste stad van Zeeland: de romeinse tijd, de middeleeuwen en de Tachtigjarige Oorlog (1568-1648). Als we inzoomen op de kleinere vlieringtoren hangt daar de ‘papklok’. In de middeleeuwen sloten ’s avonds de stadspoorten om 21 uur. Om 20 uur luidde de klok om dit aan te kondigen. Toen aten de Aardenburgers hun vijfde en laatste maaltijd van de dag: karnemelkse pap. Er werd in die tijden veel varkensvlees gegeten, vettig dus, de zure karnemelk bevorderde de spijsvertering. Nu nog luidt iedere avond om 20 uur de papklok gedurende vijf minuten. Maar of de inwoners nog steeds pap eten…?
