Das einzigartige autofreie Naturschutzgebiet Gerendal zwischen IJzeren und Schin op Geul ist u.a. bekannt für die zahlreichen Orchideenarten, die man dort antreffen kann. In den Monaten Mai und Juni sind sie im Garten beim Forsthaus zu bewundern. In dem Gebiet kann man eine Schafherde antreffen, die die Kalkgraslandschaften beweidet. Ein paar hundert Meter hinter dem Forsthaus führt eine Abzweigung nach links, wo ein 300 Meter langer Waldweg, der Gerende Berg, zu dem höher gelegenen Plateau von Margraten und dem Keutenberg führt. Diese Steigung hat einen Gefälle von 10,7 %.
