Die Dominikanerkirche und das Dominikanerkloster haben eine lange Geschichte, die bis ins 14. Jahrhundert und früher zurückreicht , obwohl die heutige Kirche seitdem, insbesondere im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, Renovierungen und Restaurierungen erfahren hat. Der erste Bau der Kirche wurde von D. Lourenço Vicente, Erzbischof von Braga, finanziert.
Die Kirche weist in ihrem eher schlichten Innenraum Elemente der romanischen, gotischen und barocken Architektur auf.
Besonders schön ist der Kreuzgang, der heute Teil des Museums der Gesellschaft Martins Sarmento ist, sowie die Orgel.
Nach der Auflösung der portugiesischen Klöster wurde die Kirche eine Zeit lang von der Armee genutzt.
