The Dominican church and convent have a long history dating back to the 14th century and before, although the current church has undergone alterations and restorations carried out since then, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries. The initial construction of the church was financed by D. Lourenço Vicente, Archbishop of Braga.
The church has elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture in its somewhat austere interior.
The cloister, which is now part of the Museu da Sociedade Martins Sarmento, is particularly beautiful, as is the organ.
After the suppression of the Portuguese monasteries, the church was used for a time by the army.
